Develop a Customer-Centric Perspective

People in a brainstorming session at a desk with many wireframes and sticky notes.

We often inadvertently focus our perspective on ourselves and our own problems and challenges, while it might be much better to focus on the problems and challenges our customers and users are having.

This likely happens because we face our problems first and foremost, but those are rarely the problems our users have.

For example, we might have to deal with our development workflow daily while we use the app that we’re working on sporadically or, worst case, only in the testing stages.

So, instead of thinking about how to make our development workflow easier, we should consider making the experience for our users easier.

Instead of thinking about how to improve the build time for our application by one second, we should consider improving the load time for our customers by one second.

Of course, both of these aspects are important, but when we focus on the customer first, we’re much more likely to keep that customer and thus give ourselves the leeway to focus on our issues as well.
