A Favor Is a Gift, Not a Transaction

A person holding a nicely wrapped gift.

If you do someone a favor, you shouldn’t expect them to return it in due time or when you need it.

It’s perfectly fine if you want a transaction, but you should be up-front about it.

Essentially, you have two options:

  • I will do this for you, but I will require something in return someday.
  • I will do this for you to help you out. You don’t have to return it, I’d rather if you pass it on, but again, I’m doing this for you. It’s a gift.

The first will maximize your gain, and the second has the potential to change the culture and positively impact more lives.

Choose wisely.
